Determination 2 (01/09)

The Israelites suffered some major desert blues as they spent 40 years in the wilderness. But their determination ensured that they wouldn't miss something good in the Promised Land.

Desert Blues

Virtue: Determination—deciding it’s worth it to finish what you’ve started.
Memory Verse: “Let us keep on running the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1, NIrV
Bible Story: Desert Blues (40 years in the wilderness) • Numbers 14:1-39
Bottom Line: Keep doing what you should do so you don’t miss something really good.

This month we’re focusing on determination, which is (1) deciding it’s worth it to finish what you’ve started. Don’t you know those Israelites kicked themselves—repeatedly—for giving up and giving in to their fears about the Promised Land? They forgot to look back at what God had done for them, and they forgot to look ahead at the prize. They got stuck in the middle, convinced that going back was better than moving ahead. (2) Thankfully, God never quits, never gives up, and always finishes what He starts. (3) He doesn’t want us to give up either, because He doesn’t want us to miss out on the really good things He has planned for us. So today, focus on helping your kids understand that if they quit, they could be giving up more than they bargained for. (4) When we finish what we start, it makes life better for everyone. But if we give up, it could mess up things for others, too.

Jesus is Baptised

Jesus was baptised by John the Baptizer. When he came out of the water the spirit of God descended on Him like a dove. A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

This past week your children learned that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptizer. We were reminded that God lives in us and makes us new from the inside out.

We had a great time making a dove light switch cover" craft - "When you turn on your light in your room, this dove will remind you that Jesus, God's Son, came to show us God's love."

In partnering together this week:

Reread the story as a family this week (Matthew 3).

Discuss baptism with your family. Why did you get baptized?

Pray together and ask Jesus to change you on the inside - in your heart, soul and mind. Tell God about anything you especially want His help with in your life.
